Why Cleveland?

Few cities are as rewarding to explore by kayak as Cleveland. From the winding curves of the Cuyahoga River to the open waters of Lake Erie, paddlers experience a side of the city that most visitors never see. Along the river, you'll glide past historic bridges, vibrant waterfront neighborhoods, industrial landmarks that helped build America's heartland, and the constantly evolving downtown skyline. As the river opens into Lake Erie, Cleveland's dramatic lakefront comes into view, offering spectacular perspectives of the city's architecture, harbor, and waterfront parks.

Cleveland's story is deeply connected to its waterways. The Cuyahoga River fueled the city's rise as a manufacturing and shipping powerhouse, while Lake Erie remains one of the region's greatest natural treasures. Today, the revitalized waterfront showcases a city that has embraced its maritime heritage while creating exciting new spaces for recreation, culture, and entertainment.

While you're in town, be sure to explore some of Cleveland's other highlights. Visit the world-famous Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, stroll through the historic West Side Market, explore the nationally acclaimed Cleveland Museum of Art, or venture into the nearby Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The city's diverse neighborhoods—from Ohio City and Tremont to Little Italy and the Flats—offer outstanding restaurants, breweries, live music, and local character.

Visitors arriving August 14–15, 2026, will also find plenty happening around town. Cleveland's famous Feast of the Assumption in Little Italy traditionally takes place around August 15, filling the neighborhood with Italian food, music, cultural celebrations, and festivities. Visitors can also enjoy summer programming along the lakefront, including live music near the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and numerous waterfront attractions and events throughout downtown.

Whether you're here for the paddling, the history, the food, or the music, Cleveland offers a unique blend of urban adventure and Great Lakes beauty that is best appreciated from the water.
